Eco Web Design

Web design can be eco in two ways – the way we run our business to be more sustainable, and by only working with people doing positive things. There’s a lot of overlap between green/eco/sustainable and ethical, and they can be hard to separate, so we talk about both!

It’s been an ongoing process for us refining how we work, which suppliers we choose to do business with and how we construct sites for clients. We’re constantly learning and can pass on what we know to you! Our broadband provider, mobile provider, banks, green web hosting provider and other suppliers have all changed over the years to be more eco-friendly and we’re always looking for new ways to reduce our impact.

The types of client we work with has changed over the years too. Since rebranding from FCS Websites to Intention, we only take on projects that we reckon are a positive contribution to society. By being more well, intentional, we’re fully engaged with the client and project and able to do our best work for you.

Our green web hosting is completely renewable – we feel that carbon offsetting or planting the occasional tree to make up for polluting isn’t enough so our green web hosting is powered by 100% wind and solar energy. The servers, routers and data centres are all powered by renewable sources.

As well as being 100% green, our UK based provider offer us excellent support in the rare cases we need it. It’s also fast and comes with loads of great features that some other companies are still charging for, like ‘SSL certificates’ that give you that padlock icon on your browser address bar to show the site is nice and safe.

We get asked this a lot, and see companies charging wildly different fees for essentially the same project. Each project is different, so we like to discuss your needs and provide a specific quote rather than just stating a figure.

A good site will be based on a solid brand, so if that’s not been taken care of professionally, that may need to be the first step. You’ll need excellent copy and images to make a success of things too. Once the designs are done this needs to be converted into a fast, easy to use site that can compete in search engines. Ongoing maintenance is vital to keep an eye on performance and security.
